When researchers ask me how to build resilience, they are usually hoping for a protocol: five steps, fixed order, guaranteed compilation. I understand the wish, because a protocol is how everything else in their working life is supposed to run. But I have now measured enough researchers before and after to give the more useful answer, and it is the one this article demonstrates rather than asserts. There is no single path, and the two people who prove it best in our data are the two who had the furthest to walk.
What follows are two real trajectories from the February 2026 cohort of the Resilience Training Paul and I deliver, drawn from the measured scores and the participants’ own written reflections. Names changed, identifying details removed, nothing invented; the full cohort results, including what did not move, are in my article on whether resilience training actually works. This piece is about the thing an aggregate can never show: how differently two people can travel to a similar place.

Katrin: the boat with holes in the sail
Katrin arrived with the second-lowest resilience score of anyone in her cohort, 2.39 on the five point scale of the Personal Resilience Indicator. In week one we ask every participant to describe their situation as a sailboat, and hers went like this: “The sail needed attention because it had holes; the boat was in a bad state and not ready for the rough sea; and the captain was too busy chasing his bad dreams. No communication with the harbour.”
Read the last sentence again, because it is the diagnosis hiding inside the metaphor. No communication with the harbour. Not a time problem. Not a skills problem. A person running on empty who had stopped signalling anyone at all.
Katrin’s route in was physiological, and it began at the least glamorous place in the curriculum: the bedroom. “The bedroom audit helped me to establish a bedtime routine, and it is easier for me to unwind from the day in the evening,” she wrote at week eight. “The bedtime audit told me that little adjustments can have a big impact on my sleep and my well-being.” From that foundation the rest stacked: journaling, daily movement, breathwork, and only then, weeks in, the deeper work on core beliefs, where she noticed for the first time that her feelings were sometimes “blurred by a core-belief” that had nothing to do with the situation in front of her. The order was the strategy. Eight weeks after the boat with holes, Katrin’s score stood at 3.89, a rise of 1.50 points, roughly three times the cohort’s average improvement, from second-lowest to above the cohort mean. Her week eight sailboat: “The holes are stitched, and the sailboat has been taken care of. The ship is prepared for a rough sea. The communication with the harbour is permanent.”
Tomas: same starting depth, opposite route
Tomas started in the bottom fifteen per cent of the cohort, at 2.78, and his boat was not sinking; it was strained, still moving, being pushed beyond capacity. From a similar depth, he built in the opposite direction. Sleep tracking was useful to him, but the tools that changed his weeks were cognitive. “In any given situation I would consciously notice that I am giving in to a cognitive distortion,” he wrote. “This helped me stop it and reframe my assessment.” And the daily practice he kept was not a routine but a ritual, run jointly: “This is such a powerful technique I started applying together with my wife before falling asleep. It helped us notice positive things in our life and also end the day on a good note.”
Katrin repaired the boat. Tomas retrained the captain. At week eight his score stood at 4.08, up 1.30, his largest single gain in Perseverance, and his summary is the sentence I would paint on a training room wall: “I feel I used the course to its maximum in a way that was helpful to me which was actually applying the techniques and thinking the concepts through on daily basis.”
And because a case study without an unresolved edge is an advertisement: not everything moved for Tomas. “My energy levels remain low. I have been in a constant grind for 10 years or so, so this is something that will require longer than 3 months to handle.” A decade of depletion does not reverse in two months, and he did not pretend it had. What changed is that he now works on it systematically, with a measured trajectory that says the work is working.
What two boats prove that no average can
Same cohort. Same curriculum. Same starting region of the scale. Two routes that barely overlap, one through the body, one through the mind, both ending above the cohort average. This is the strongest argument I know against one size fits all, and it is why the training teaches twenty five techniques in the full knowledge that nobody keeps them all. The curriculum is not a prescription; it is a menu, and the actual work of the eight weeks is finding the handful of tools that fit your pattern and practising them past the point where they need remembering. Not by one method, and the people who prove it are the ones who improved most. Both started near the bottom of the scale and rose more than a full point on a five point instrument in eight weeks. What the routes shared was not a technique. It was daily application of tools matched to the person.
Can you build resilience from a very low starting point?
On our evidence, a low start is headroom, not a verdict. The participant with the second-lowest resilience score in her cohort recorded one of its largest improvements, roughly three times the cohort average. What a low start does change is the sensible order of work: someone running on empty usually needs the physiological foundations first, sleep above all, because pattern change is expensive and you cannot pay for it on no fuel.
How long does it take to build resilience?
Eight weeks was enough for measurable, large change on most dimensions in our cohort, and not enough for everything, and both halves of that sentence matter. One participant named his own horizon plainly: a decade of depletion will take longer than three months to reverse. Sleep and daily structure move within weeks. Deeper capacities build over months. The point of a training is not to finish repaired; it is to leave with the tools still running.
